Brooklin Village : Kitchen Redesign

BV finishes

I’ve been working on what I call my #BrooklinVillage project for a few years now and during this time we have been slowly renovating my client’s cookie cutter style house to reflect their tastes and lifestyle and make it into a home.  From day one, a painting of my client’s family cottage has been the main inspiration and with each new design I look to it to help decide on the palette, fabrics and furnishings of each room and the feeling I want to invoke in that space.  This month we are starting the renovations on the kitchen! And since the design scheme of the adjoining family room has a lakeside feel and look to it, I decided to keep the colours light and bright and flow the family room’s colour palette of soft minty blues and creams into the space.

Even though this house is just a few years old, the previous owners chose mainly builder grade finishes except for the cabinets, which are solid wood. So instead of replacing them, they are getting sprayed with a cleaner and brighter white! The existing laminate counter tops are going and will be replaced with gorgeous stone composite that looks like marble but without the worry and maintenance. We’re installing a brand new island and painting it a pretty muted green-blue. The inside island will be designed to be more functional with an custom built organization system and the lower corner cabinets on the main section are being rebuilt so that my client can better utilize those spaces as well. We are also replacing the existing standard sink with a beautiful farm style apron sink and the awful industrially looking hood range is getting replaced with a custom built piece.

A few before photos to give you an idea of what the space currently looks like.

The biggest undertaking of this reno is going to be the floor. The existing brown tile is going (thank heavens!) and we are extending the hardwood from the family room into the space. I absolutely love wood floors in a kitchen, so I was over the moon when my client agreed to doing it since it requires moving EVERYTHING out except the upper cabinets to install it! I love it when a client can see my vision and is willing to do what’s needed to be done to make it happen.

I can’t wait!

Some of my favourite elements we are adding are:

The lighting. I think this is the perfect combination. The two pendants are for over the island and the lantern for above the kitchen table.

This fabric. This was the first fabric I ever showed this client, so I’m happy we finally found the perfect spot to use it!

And these knobs…. Looove…I’ve been dying to use these somewhere. And the new island is the lucky place.

I should also mention that we are taking out the chef desk and creating a wine bar! It’s going to be ideal spot for entertaining with everything my clients will need right at their finger-tips.

The project is scheduled to start in a few weeks, so make sure you’re following me on Instagram to see the progress as it happens!
